Frequently Asked Questions
1.
Why do some pools turn my hair green?
A combination of two factors, copper and
alkalinity can cause pool water to turn blonde hair green. Copper from heater
coils and copper pipe is pulled into water that is overly alkaline. The copper
is absorbed by the hair giving it a green hue. Most shampoos are not acidic
enough to release the copper. Paul Mitchell’s Shampoo Three, Redken’s Hair
Cleansing Crème and KMS California’s Head Remedy Clarifying Shampoo are three
brands that claim to be formulated to fix “swimmers hair”.
2.
How often should I clean my filter?
The recommended time between cleanings differs;
depending on the type of filter media you have. The easiest way to verify when
it is time to service your filtration system is by checking your pressure gauge
reading. A good rule of thumb is servicing when the reading is 8 -10 psi above
the standard operating pressure. When scheduling filter maintenance on the
basis of time here are some suggestions: Sand filters should be backwashed
annually and serviced every 3 to 5 years (this should include flushing the
system and replacing the sand). Grid filters should be serviced every 6
months (this should include flushing the system and replacing the diatomaceous
earth). Cartridge filters should be cleaned every 3 months.
3.
How long should I run my filter?
The total volume of water should be circulated
through the filtration system twice during each 24 hour period. The average
pump connected to 2” piping filters approximately 80 to 100 gallons of water
per minute. For most pool owners this equates to a running time of about 4
hours per day. However, during the summer with higher temperatures and bather
loads the filtration time should be doubled.
